STARTS Prize 2016 – Open Call

Ars Electronica issues an open call for entries to a competition that will determine the first recipients of STARTS (Science + Technology + Arts), prestigious and—with two €20,000 grants—highly endowed awards. Expressly encouraged are innovative projects at the interface of science, technology and art.

The “STARTS Prize” aims to showcase and celebrate visions and achievements at the interface between innovation and creation—driven by both science/technology and the arts as well as to honor the inspiring individuals and teams behind these achievements. By opening it to artists, creative professionals, researchers and companies from all over the world, the STARTS Prize targets to expand everyone’s horizon in order to work on new ideas and showcase best-practice examples. This international prize will highlight Europe’s power as a breeding ground for innovation and creative excellence.

Two €20,000 cash grants will be awarded in conjunction with the STARTS Prize 2016: one for artistic research and thus for projects that have the potential to influence and change the mode of application, development and perception of technologies; and one for cooperative ventures teaming up industry/technology and art/culture in ways that open up new paths for innovation.

Call for Papers: TABOO – TRANSGRESSION – TRANSCENDENCE in Art and Science

Submissions are welcome both from scientific fields acquainted to audio & visual technology and/or new media theory as well as from the diverse fields of artistic expression related with scientific issues.

DEADLINE: February 29, 2016

Suggested, but not exclusive topics, are those associated, from an artistic, scientific or ethical perspective, with: • Art as subversion and art as transcendence • Dirt, disgust and the polluted • The body machine and the animal body • Animal rights in Art and Science • Taboos in technological applications and transcendence in art creation • Tradition, experimental use of technology and contemporary aesthetics • Internet, new dimensions of “touching” and control • Post gender, transgressive identities and social models • Transgression, subculture and ritual • Trance culture, psychotropic substances and socialization • Attraction, eroticism and techno-reproduction • Dogmas’ transformations and dissolutions in present times • Educational environments and new practices of space transcendence • Plastic surgery and bοdy modification-body alteration • Gene editing, mutation and eugenics • Psycho-pharmacology, somatechnology and post-humanism • Human-like machines, uncanny valley and sex technology • Nanotechnology, skin and other dimensions of the body • Neurophysiology and cybernetic art • Art and neuroscience
The conference proceedings will be published in digital format (e-Book) with ISBN number. The working languages of the conference are Greek and English.
